When Hurricane Katrina pounded the Gulf Coast in 2005, I immediately flew to the affected area to cover the story for PEOPLE magazine. Over the next two weeks, I flew rescue missions, handed out food, and reported on the human tragedy of one of the most significant stories of my career.
